beer street and gin lane

by william hogarth

the making process

Designed and created a double-sided marionette puppet based on William Hogarth's prints Beer Street and Gin Lane which portray the  depravity of drinking gin in contrast with the merits of beer consumption. One side depicted the starving orphan character from Gin Lane, whilst the other side represented the glutinous butcher character from Beer Street.

Constructed the puppet body and mechanism using wooden rods and eyelets.

The faces, hands and ham prop were made from Sculpey which were baked and painted. Eyelets were attached to the head and arm joints for the puppet strings which operated it. The clothes were made for both the orphan character and the butcher character. A steel tin and expandable foam were used to create a tankard which the butcher holds.
